The city gets it's entity from the remaining of the man made hill of Sarmasjed. The basis of this hill is related to the Persians whom rested there 8 centuries before Christ. The city was strongly influenced by the political changes in religions and productive aspects in different sizes and cultures. Although in recent past the entity of the city has been related to oil resources.
Geographical structure of the city
The city was constructed in mountain region with different heights, so it has a mountainous view and construction. the city's area is 963.89 hectares and is 31 degrees and 52' to 32 degrees and 1' of north width and 41 degrees and 7' to 49 degrees and 12' east length from GM (Greenwich Meridian). The height of the city is estimated between 450 m and 175 m. The whole slope of the land is between 18 and percent.
Social & Cultural structure of the city
The population of Masjid-I-Solyman city was about 44, 651 during 1335 which was most worked up in oil extraction. Between 1335-1345 the population growth was about 3.7% a year which increased to 66, 488 people. The growth was only 1.8% a year during 1335 to 1345 and 3% a year between 1355-1365 and reached to 104, 787 people. And finally the population became up to 114,000.
Economic Structure of the City
Masjid-I- Solyman was constructed as a goal for extracting oil. In 1335 62.8% of the population was working in this industry. At that time the city got it's importance and value. Because of the social and political changes in the country, the economic oil based city was replaced with armies and big building construction works were started there. In those years we faced with employment growth in public service departments and a decrease in employment in industrial and mineral departments and even in oil refining industries. During 1335-1365 we had growth in general service employment and a decline in oil extraction during 1335-1345 and replacing it with public department, employment. We cannot depend on this decline to find the reason of being passive of oil companies. The basic reason is for not having necessary planning for industrial growth which is the main source of development for the city in all aspects including communication, social and individual welfare and human resources.
The shortage and problems of the current situation
A) The danger of poisonous gas spring: for existence of poisonous gas spring in the city, any excavation and earthquakes may cause the dangerous gas to escape and poison the city in ten minutes.
B) Disability of fundamental construction: Network of decayed gas and water pipes is unsafe and cannot be used. Sewage is also spread throughout the channel and pass the whole city.
C) Situation at pass network: 10% of some parts of the city do not have any accessibility for auto passage and the only way to go there is by walking through the natural unsafe passages. Some parts of the city which have access to auto pass, includes 20% of the city which don't have any technical foundation including necessary slopes, water and etc… Some parts of the city with more technical foundations don't have necessary blocking water passages and side walks which include 55% of passages. These passages which have correct technical characteristics are only 15% of the passes.
D) Building situations: About 70% of the buildings that are built by stone, pipes and other materials do not even have the minimum technical characteristics. These buildings built by oil companies that have the right foundation are aged more than thirty years and are about 15% of all the buildings. Only 15% of the buildings that are built by private sectors are usable. So we cannot deal with Masjid-I-Solyman as a city according to the network of the buildings and civil fundamental and by low civil standards, it has maximum facilities only for a 20,000 populated city. According to all these problems which have been mentioned above are more than 80% of the city and need development for continuing its life.
